Soprano - McKenzie Warriner Piano - Gina Hyunmin Lee A huge thank you to my wonderful collaborator, McKenzie, for introducing me to this amazing interpretation of Emily Dickinson's vivid poem by Lee Hoiby! Hoiby was a 20th-century American composer and a virtuoso pianist, which explains why his piano writing here is incredibly demanding yet so satisfying to play. "There came a wind like a bugle" is part of Hoiby's Four Dickinson Songs, a set that includes three of her poems and an excerpt from one of her personal letters. Hoiby joins a rich tradition of American composers drawn to Dickinson's text, most notably Aaron Copland, who famously set the very same poem in his own cycle, Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson.
